WROUGHTON moved back to the top of the Wiltshire League Premier Division table with a dominant 6-1 victory at home to bottom side Malmesbury Victoria Development at the weekend.

The Weir Field side began the day second behind Shrewton United on goal difference, but took advantage of their rivals’ involvement in the Wiltshire Senior Cup to climb to the summit.

Despite their lowly position, Malmesbury are the only side to inflict defeat on Wroughton in the league this term, but they never looked likely to repeat that feat on Saturday.

Wroughton set the tone from the off and had as good as sealed the win before half-time after racing into a 5-0 lead as Kyle Parker struck twice and Tom Price, Aaron Maximen and Tom Dingle also hit the target.

Parker then finished off the rout when he completed his hat-trick in the second half.

The remaining two league games played over the weekend took place in the lower reaches of the table as second-from-bottom Devizes Town Reserves claimed a second win of the campaign by beating Ludgershall Sports 2-1, with Ben Perrett getting both goals for the victors.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development were 3-0 winners at home to Pewsey Vale Development thanks to efforts from Bailey Gallagher, Nick Mason and George Staten.

Shrewton’s hopes of progress in the Wiltshire Senior Cup came unstuck with a 4-2 defeat at Toolstation League Premier Division side Westbury United.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Shrewton battled back bravely and strikes from Dom Jackson and Zac McNally levelled the scores, only for Westbury to raise their level in the closing stages and score twice more to snatch the win.

Tom Hoskins got the only goal of the game as Cricklade Town won 1-0 at fellow Wiltshire League side Trowbridge Town.

There was another all-Wiltshire League tie at Purton where the hosts beat Marlborough Town 4-2.

Jack Duckers was the star of the show with a hat-trick, while William Backhouse also scored for Purton as Aaron Presley and Jordan Ball replied for Marlborough.
