TWO locally-based Chippenham drivers took part in the 18th running off the world's premier Formula Ford racing event, The Walter Hayes Trophy Meeting, around the 1.6 mile National Silverstone circuit last weekend, writes TIM CRISP.

There were 16 heat races before the final event and both local drivers, Luke Cooper - who won this year's Castle Combe Racing Clubs FF1600 title - and Thomas Capezzone, made it through to the 15-lap final.

At the start of the weekend, there were more than 100 drivers taking part, all trying to make the top 36 for the final.

The event was won for the second year running by Michael Moyers, who up until this season has been a regular competitor at Castle Combe.

Even with an engine problem, Cooper finished in an creditable sixth place overall and Capezzone crossed the line in 18th position.
