NORTH Wilts registered a mixed set of results last weekend in national and regional competitions.

The ladies at the Chippenham-based club march on in the Yetton Trophy after producing a fine performance to brush aside Thornbury 83-57.

However, North Wilts’ men suffered two losses, going down to Thornbury 83-68 in the Denny Plate, and then being beaten 82-57 by reigning Central region champions Clarrie Dunbar in the Wessex League.

North Wilts ladies were always in control of their difficult Yetton Trophy second round tie with Thornbury, leading from start to finish.

The Chippenham club flew out of the blocks and led overall after five ends 28-11 and 48-27 after 10. They were pulled back slightly to 61-46 ahead at 15 ends but had extended the advantage to 74-50 after 18 before running out as comfortable 83-57 victors at 21 ends.

North Wilts won on all four rinks, with the home foursome of Barbara Shepheard, Marguerite Alexander, Viv Baskerville and Jean Collier taking top spot with a 21-10 success.

In the next round on November 17, North Wilts will face MidGlos (Brockworth, Gloucester).

While there was joy for North Wilts ladies, the men suffered a double weekend loss.

They lost heavily 87-38 to Malvern Hills a fortnight earlier in the Denny Cup but failed to grab a second chance in the competition as they went down 83-68 to Thornbury in the consolation Denny Plate for first-round losers.

North Wilts men then lost their second Central region match of the Wessex League season, going down 57-82 to Clarrie Dunbar.

They lost on three of the four rinks, with the only success for North Wilts coming away from home where Tom Newman’s foursome bagged a 24-18 win.

North Wilts men’s next Wessex League game is on December 2 when they face Thornbury.
