PEWSEY Vale ran in nine tries to triumph 59-22 at bottom side Supermarine and claim a second win of the season in Dorset & Wilts One North.

Vale hit the ground running and from the kick-off, Olly Lavis caught the ball before setting off on a 70m run through the Supermarine defence and offloading to Tom Flippance to cross in the corner.

Supermarine hit back with a catch-and-drive try from a lineout, but Pete Baird got the visitors back in front, finishing off after Olly Spence took a quick penalty.

Pewsey upped the tempo as the first half drew to a close and Phil Vallis scored two tries, both converted by Flippance, and they ran in five more in the second half, all of which were converted.

Lavis got the first touchdown after the restart, dashing over the whitewash from halfway, and Pewsey then secured the ball from the restart where Harry Morgan won the race to the tryline.

Lavis was next over to bag a brace but Valis went one better five minutes later as he completed his hat-trick. Chasing a Pewsey relief kick, he collected the high ball and covered the 70m at pace to score between the posts.

Supermarine continued to press themselves and scored a second try of their own, again from a lineout drive, but Pewsey responded immediately as Sam Flippance stormed to the tryline.

Vale became unbalanced in defence in the final 10 minutes and were wrong-footed twice by the home team, who scored two well-taken tries, but it did little to take the gloss off the final score for Pewsey.

Elsewhere, large scale team changes hit Minety hard as they were beaten 57-8 at home by Avonvale.

Avonvale used their pacey backs to great advantage and within the first 18 minutes, had scored three tries to open up a 17-0 lead.

To their credit, Minety did not allow their heads to drop and strong tackling from all the forwards saw them fight back to stem the tide.

When Jay Thompson found Ben Scott at a lineout, Minety launched an impressive rolling maul that took them into the Avonvale 22, but the defence was resolute and the village side came away empty-handed.

Against the run of the play, the visitors picked up their fourth try just before the half-hour mark, but Minety were able to get on the scoresheet themselves before the break when Ash Windle kicked a penalty.

Any hopes the home side had of a recovery disappeared in added time, though, as Bram Coleman and Matt Stone both suffered injuries before Windle was sent off for a tip tackle.

Minety’s 14-man side were unable to keep out Avonvale after the break and they soon ran in tries five, six and seven through an exhausted defensive line.

Avonvale took their try tally to nine in the closing stages but as the rain intensified, Andrew Hibbard drove forward into the visitors’ 22 and from the ensuing ruck, Mark Glew crashed over for a well-deserved consolation try.

Calne were beaten 34-12 away at near neighbours Melksham, while Sutton Benger went down 24-7 at Royal Wootton Bassett II.

  • DEVIZES got back to winning ways in Southern Counties South when racking up a half-century of points to win 53-12 away at Dorchester on Saturday.

The two sides were closely matched in the first half in Dorset, with Devizes holding a narrow 19-12 lead at the change of ends.

However, the visitors upped the tempo after the break and scored 34 points without reply to claim a bonus-point success and keep themselves in the top four in the table.

Elsewhere, it was not such an enjoyable afternoon for Corsham as they went down 20-8 at second-in-the-table Frome, meaning their record this season stands at three wins and three defeats.
