MALMESBURY Victoria made progress to the second round of the FA Vase on Saturday when beating Roman Glass St George by two goals away from home.

Kevin Bridgeman’s side defeated opposition from higher in the non-league ladder to make progress after Shane Bumphrey and Joe Tranter found the back of the net.

It continues what has been a positive start to the season for Malmesbury, who currently sit mid-table in the Hellenic Division One West league after securing 10 points from their opening six league matches.

Toolstation Premier Division side Westbury were also in action in the Vase as they faced Saltash.

There was no such luck for Neil Kirkpatrick’s men, though, who slipped to a 2-1 loss – ensuring their Vase run ended at the first-round proper hurdle. Malmesbury’s Division One West rivals Pewsey meanwhile were in league action, but they were held to a goalless draw at home by Newent Town.

That result means Pewsey remain ninth in the league table, 12 points short of top club Cheltenham Saracens.

There were better fortunes however for Sam Collier’s Royal Wootton Bassett in the Premier Division.

Bradley Pagliaroli hit a brace while Matt Bennett’s strike shortly before half time went a long way in helping Bassett establish some second half confidence as they lifted themselves to fifth in the table.

Elsewhere in the Toolstation Premier Division, Bradford Town made a winning start to life under new boss Wayne Thorne when beating Wellington 3-1 away from home.

Will Hailston and Daniel Price were on target for the Bobcats before substitute Jason Henley made an impact 15 minutes after coming off the bench to record Bradford’s fifth win of the season and a first under former Melksham boss Thorne, who was confirmed as the new Trowbridge Road boss before the match.

In Toolstation Division One, Corsham Town were held to a goalless draw at home by league strugglers Radstock.

Despite drawing, Corsham remain firmly in the hunt for promotion – though they are now four points adrift of table topping Welton Rovers.

Calne experienced better fortunes though and moved up to fifth after comprehensively beating Portishead Town 5-0.

Towards the lower end of the table, Chippenham Park remain in the bottom two after losing 2-0 away Oldland Abbotonians while Warminster came out on the wrong end of an eight-goal thriller at home to Chard Town – the visitors eventually winning 3-5.
