CORSHAM Town required penalties to book their place in the next round of the Les Phillips Cup after an inspiring comeback against Hallen at home on Tuesday.

Justin Flowers watched his troops trail 2-0, before a brace from Jon Bazley saw them through to spot kicks.

A 4-3 shootout win was just the job for Flowers, who says he was happy with the character shown by his players.

“It was a funny game, really, because we played very well,” he said.

“In the first half, we were very sloppy so they scored twice, but we were able to score just before the break.

“Then the second half was probably one of the best halves we have had this season and we definitely should have put it to bed, but it’s good when you win on penalties. We would have been hard done by if we didn’t win.

“When you’re playing well and creating chances, it is hard to be unhappy, but we have to make sure that we are finishing them. Once we do that I think we will be flying.

“We made a few changes for the game because we rested a few of the lads who had injuries, but we want to go as far as we can in these competitions.

“We have a big squad so when we swap in players, it is almost like-for-like so it’s good we have them, to be honest.”

Next up for Corsham is a visit from Toolstation League First Division leaders Chard and despite the Somerset side’s formidable form, Flowers thinks his side have a decent shot of coming away with a positive result.

“It’s not easy but we are in the area of the league where we want to be and we have played a lot of teams in the top half,’’ added Flowers.

“We had a good game against Cheddar when they were second. We went a goal up and probably deserved to win.

“So we are confident we can beat Chard and if we do, it would put us in a great position.”

Elsewhere, Chippenham Park were also involved in midweek Les Phillips Cup action, facing Cadbury Heath at Hardenhuish Park.

After also drawing 2-2, the hosts were unable to progress as they lost 5-4 in their penalty shootout.

The defeat means manager Joe Sharples is still without a victory in his tenure at the club, as they were also beaten 4-1 by Welton Rovers on Saturday.

Devizes Town had the better of a combative weekend Toolstation League First Division with Calne Town on Saturday, the match featuring three red cards.

However, the home side held out for a 3-1 win after goals from Joshua Bingham, Robert Mitchell and Jamie Walters.
