NAT Jarvis’ second-half strike was enough for Chippenham Town to finally see off local rivals Swindon Supermarine in the FA Cup as they earned a 1-0 second qualifying round replay win on Tuesday night.

Marine had been more than a match for their higher league opponents during Saturday’s original tie at Hardenhuish Park, in which Jarvis also scored twice and Town's James Guthrie was sent off.

But at the Webbswood Stadium Jarvis’ strike midway through the second half following a defensive error was enough to see off Marine, who play a tier below in the Southern League Premier Division South.

Bluebirds boss Mark Collier, whose side will host either Hendon or Phoenix Sports in the third qualifying round, said: “On Saturday, we could have been about 4-1 down at half-time and didn’t deserve to get anything from the game – but we had 10 men for a long time, so some credit had to have come out of that performance.

“I don’t think we took the favourites tag very well but overall, I think we had a bit too much for them in the replay.

“We should have been in front at half-time as we hit the post and we had a couple of other chances, and you just want that lucky one to go in that eases the pressure.

“In all fairness, once the goal did go in, I thought we saw it out quite comfortably.

“It was always going to be a tricky tie given the proximity of the two clubs and all Tuesday was about was getting through.”

The two teams were evenly matched in a goalless first half, although only the woodwork denied Chippenham the lead seven minutes before the break when Mike Jones saw an effort smash against the post and spin back across the goalline to safety.

The Bluebirds then enjoyed a good spell early in the second half and Dean Evans and James Guthrie should have done better with chances before Jarvis eventually broke the deadlock, pouncing on a mix-up in the heart of the Marine defence following a long ball forward.

Supermarine only tested Chippenham keeper Conor Thompson once on the night, with Brad Gray drawing a save in the closing moments, and Collier felt that solid defensive effort was enough to warrant safe passage through to the next round where they will host either Hendon or Phoenix Sports on October 6.

“As the home team, Marine didn’t really create anything. You expect them to huff and puff and throw things forward, but we dealt with that well,” said Collier.

“We didn’t have a goalkeeper at 4pm but Conor Thompson came to the party and handled everything magnificently and I don’t think they really worked him.”
