MARLBOROUGH captain Jamie Pittams has urged his troops to keep their feet on the ground in the wake of a flying start to the new season.

The Common side made it 10 points from a possible 10 in South West One East with a 39-18 win at home to Trowbridge at the weekend, getting the better of the battle between the two sides promoted from Southern Counties South last term.

With the campaign still only a fortnight old, Marlborough are one of five teams still able to boast a perfect record, but Pittams is not getting carried away by what they might be capable of ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wimborne.

“It’s been a brilliant start, we couldn’t have asked for any more,” said Pittams, whose side also won 24-12 at Swindon on the opening day of the season.

“It’s difficult to compare the two wins, but Trowbridge won our league last season and we came up with them, so it’s nice to gauge where we are compared to them.

“We are here to be competitive, but after a decent start, we need to make sure we don’t get ahead of ourselves.

“You don’t want to get complacent because then that can lead to problems and your standards slip. All of a sudden, you are getting towards the end of the season and you’ve made life difficult for yourselves.”

Pittams is impressed at how well Marlborough have adjusted to their new level but is fully aware that plenty of tough tests are ahead.

“There is much better organisation amongst the teams in this league and the fitness levels are higher,” said Pittams.

“I think we will find there are no easy games. There won’t be a match where we think we can have this weekend off, rest a few guys and still win. We need to treat every game like it is a title decider.”

Having already tasted victory on the road this season, Marlborough now travel to a Wimborne side who were beaten in their opening match on home turf.

But with a lengthy trip to Dorset to contend with, Pittams says it is vital his team hit the ground running.

“Swindon are a team we haven’t played in a number of years, so it was good to go there and win, but Wimborne is a lot longer trip, so we need to make sure we are ready to go right from the start,” said Pittams.

“Sometimes you get off the coach and you’re a couple of tries down before you have even switched on. We have to make sure that isn’t the case this weekend.”
