WARMINSTER and Minety played out a nine-try Dorset & Wilts One North thriller at Folly Lane, the home side emerging as 41-28 victors.

Minety, who handed first team debuts to 18 year old James Nixon and veteran Phil Ward, also included club chairman Ken Wright on the bench and had the better of the opening exchanges, scrum-half Garin Garland slotting a second-minute penalty and adding another 10 minutes later.

Warminster though got themselves on the board when fly-half Gavin Pratt landed a three-pointer and snatched the lead shortly before the half-hour mark when scrum-half Jimmy Rees went down the blind side and sent flanker Ollie Pinnell in for a try.

A second score followed five minutes later as Pinnell crashed over from short range and Pratt's conversion took them into a 15-6 lead before Garland reduced arrears with a third penalty just before the break.

The second half was barely underway when Garland broke out of the Minety 22, sprinted 60 metres down field before offloading to fly-half Tom McAllister, who ran in to touch down wide out on the left wing. Garland’s long-range conversion was successful and Minety led 16-15.

Warminster struck back in the 44th minute, a kick ahead and bounce allowing centre Dean McIntyre in, Pratt again converting, but the lead changed hands again as McAllister dummied over for his second try and Garland booted the conversion.

Minety pushed on but were punished for their endeavours when Warminster broke free deep in their own half and Ross Williams ran in for a try beneath the posts from 40 metres out in the 55th minute.

Back came Minety as Howse sidestepped his way through the defence after a break from McAllister, the missed conversion leaving them a point behind with 10 minutes left.

But Warminster took control, Williams crossing the line again before Pratt also touched down to wrap up the victory.

Newly-promoted Sutton Benger kicked off their campaign with a 22-19 local derby victory over Chippenham 2nd.

Chippenham opened the scoring with a try but Benger fly-half Ollie Maher landed a penalty before scrum-half Chris Bolter broke tackles to score a try.

Ben Pope added a second score, the full-back demonstrating his pace but a Chippenham score before half-time reduced their arrears to three points.

Benger had to defend for long periods of the second half and Chippenham seized a 19-15 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

However, quick-thinking Benger flanker Tom Pinniger ripped the ball from the Chippenham scrum-half and darted through a gap in the defence to score under the posts, Maher's conversion wrapping up the villagers' win.

Devizes 2nd lost out 19-17 to Swindon College Old Boys 2nd in Dorset & Wilts Two North, captain Kieran Hiscock, wing Martin Dickinson and Craig Hurcombe scoring tries.
