MARLBOROUGH'S dream start to South West One East continued as they clinched a 39-18 victory over county rivals Trowbridge at The Common.

The promoted home side, week one winners over Swindon, made a superb start and soon enjoyed a 17-3 lead.

Pio Tuwai and Ben Fulton combined to send Avenai Cakaunitavuki on a surge to the try line for the opening score, fly-half Tom West converting, before the two sides exchanged penalties.

Eleven minutes in Marlborough had their second try as Tuwai sent in Cakaunitavuki again and West added the extras.

With scrum dominance, Henry Webster powered over in the corner for a third try before Trowbridge hit back with a penalty and converted try before the interval to trail 22-13.

A scrappy second half saw Mitieli Vulikijapani cut inside off a good pass by Fulton to secure the bonus point.

Joeli Radovu scored on the hour mark and soon after Tuwai got a try after good work at the breakdown by James Farrell and Jamie Pittams.

West converted before Trowbridge added a late score of their own.

Injury-hit Chippenham's opening home match of the campaign ended in defeat as Wimborne clinched a 42-21 success at Allington Field.

The home side lost Gareth Angell in the warm-up and then Matt Dickens early on after a thumping tackle and Wimborne scored the opening try which was converted.

Further injuries, including to captain Aaron Clark, further disrupted Chippenham, who conceded a further three points from a penalty before Oli Alcorn's mazy run brought their first try, converted by Al MacKenzie.

Wimborne added a further three points just before half-time and a converted try after it strengthened their advantage.

Chippenham were back in it as replacement Rob Hawkins touched down and MacKenzie converted but two further Wimborne scores followed.

Alcorn scored his second try, converted by MacKenzie, but Wimborne had the final say with a further converted try.

Royal Wootton Bassett's perfect start to the South West One East campaign continued as they put Witney to the sword 39-10 to move into second spot in the early-season standings.

Despite falling behind to an early penalty, Bassett hit back to lead 14-3 at the interval, their opening try coming as wing Sean Marsden outpaced the defence to touch down and scrum-half Tom Fieldsend converted.

A decent Witney spell followed, Bassett having prop Chris Rowland sent to the sin bin for a maul offence but just before half-time, Bassett skipper Gavin Ougan fielded a poor clearance and dodged the defence to touch down, Fieldsend adding the extras.

Stepping it up a level in the second period, Bassett scored again as number eight Kyle Lovell picked up and offloaded to Fieldsend, who finished.

Lovell then got on the scoresheet from the base of a close-range scrum, Fieldsend with the extras before Dan Hale on the wing raced in for a score.

Bassett lost vice-captain Ieuan Clements to an injured knee and Witney responded with a converted try, but Fieldsend's second wrapped up the comfortable triumph.
