BROTHERS Greg and Doug Rogan Rea had plenty to celebrate after both enjoying victories in the end-of-season Marlborough & District Junior Athletics Club Championships, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

Greg won the U20 men’s title after a close battle with Kieran Short and Jay Roden with just 31 points separating the trio in the quadrathlon format in which each athlete wins points tackling the 100m, 800m, long jump and vortex throw.

Younger brother Doug’s win in the U15 boys’ age group was even tighter as he only finished nine points head of Ben Jones with Tim Hook a further seven behind in third.

The Short family also had plenty to be happy about after Sunday’s event with

Callum winning the U23s competition, Kieran finishing runner-up to Rogan Rea in the U20s and Maya Short claiming third in the U17 women’s age group.

In the U11 girls’ competition – in which competitors run a shorter 60m sprint and 600m – there was an outstanding victory for Evie Hallsworth, who scored a massive 223 points which was a UK Athletics Gold Award Quadrathlon performance.

All the medals for the U11s and nines’ age groups were presented by Charlie Sheppy. Sheppy was one of the founders of MADJA and as a mark of appreciation, the club presented him with an engraved tankard while he also he shares the Services to the Club Cup with fellow junior age group coach David Smith.

“Charlie helped set up the club in 2005 and has been a real stalwart,” said current club secretary and coach Vanya Body.

“He has been forced to step down due to business commitments, as has David, and they will both me greatly missed.”

The older age group medals were presented by the club’s patron and former Olympic 400m hurdles champion David Hemery.
