CENTRE Jamie Roberts is relishing the prospect of playing under new club Bath, adding that he’s move west in search of silverware.

Roberts, 31, became one of the biggest off-season moves of the season when joining Todd Blackadder’s troops from London-based club Harlequins.

A three-year stint at the Twickenham Stoop saw Roberts combine his domestic duties while featuring for Wales on a regular basis.

Now a little closer to home, Roberts said he’s settled into life at Bath quickly and cannot wait for the season proper to start.

“I want to win with this club, that’s the main reason I came here,” said Roberts.

“I believe there’s an opportunity to win silverware – that has to be our focus as a team. .

“There are a few familiar faces here, which is nice.

“The Welsh familiarity is awesome, but on the flip side of that I have to make sure it’s not a comfort zone.

“I’m very aware that I have to make a conscious effort to get to know the other lads. Us Welsh are tight knit, and it’s easy to position yourself in that safety net.”

No international duty or tours elsewhere means Roberts has enjoyed his first full pre-season at his domestic club in a number of years.

The additional time in England has not only allowed the Newport-born player the chance to settle into his new home, but also mix with the extensive members of staff at Farleigh House – who he could only speak highly about.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed pre-season, it’s the first time in quite a while that I’ve had a full pre-season.

“Moving to another club and having a full eight weeks under my belt before the season starts has been good.

“Farleigh House has all the facilities a player could need to grow and improve as a rugby player.

“I like to think I’ve done that in the past few weeks. The rugby coaches have been great integrating all the new players.

“We’ve made some real improvements as a team and myself on a personal level too.

“But there’s nothing quite like playing rugby games. Getting used to the hits again and getting up off the floor is different to training.”

While it’s clear Roberts has brought into Bath’s silverware mentality, the Welsh international admits he’s faced a number of individual challenges ahead of pre-season.

Roberts said: “There’s an individual challenge for myself to settle as quickly as possible.

“That responsibility I have to take on myself – it can range from getting to know the players, the plays and building relationships with the people.

“I couldn’t have been more grateful regarding how the lads have welcomed the new players, there’s a real family culture at the club.

“Myself and my partner have settled well into Bath too, it’s certainly a different pace of life compared to south-west London. I’m loving it.”
