MASON Thompson scored a brace as Fairford Town secured their first Premier Division point of the campaign in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Tuesday night.

The hosts made a dream start to the game as they opened the scoring through captain Lee Smith after six minutes.

It was 2-0 inside 20 minutes as former Bassett man Thompson opened his Fairford account to double the advantage.

However Bassett were soon level with Matt Bennett grabbing a goal back on the half-hour mark before striker Brad Pagliaroli drew the visitors level on 33 minutes.

There was further drama on the stroke of half-time with the fifth goal of the night, a first of the season for Rob Lincoln to put the Wiltshire side in front going into the interval.

The second half continued where the first half had finished with another goal soon after the restart, as Thompson applied the finish to make it 3-3.

Bassett were beaten 4-3 by Windsor on Saturday having held a 3-0 lead at one stage.

After a dominant opening 45 minutes, Bassett were 2-0 up before they further stretched their lead as Matt Bennett scored alongside Bradley Pagliaroli’s brace.

Things were going well for the away side up until the hour mark, where a 10-minute spell saw the hosts retaliate with three quickfire goals of their own.

With the game in the balance, the momentum remained with the home side as they pinched a winner with four minutes remaining, to make it 4-3.

In Division One West on Saturday, Pewsey Vale were whacked 6-0 by Cheltenham Saracens.
