DEVIZES Town assistant manager Tom Perkins believes three points away from home against Radstock Town on Tuesday night helped to get the ball rolling for his side.

After suffering an opening day defeat at home to Cheddar, Devizes recorded their first points of the season when downing hosts Radstock 3-1 as goals from Ryan Bole, Jack Hopper and Jake Waters earned a deserved three points.

A win away from home came as a welcome relief for Perkins, who admitted his side’s poor pre-season form increased the pressure on his troops ahead of a busy league campaign.

He said: “Saturday was a difficult game for us, so it was nice to get three points away from home on Tuesday and get the ball rolling.

“Any game in our league is pretty tough, so to go away from home and pick up three points – particularly after a poor defeat – was good.

“Radstock finished fifth last year so we were expecting quite a tough game. I don’t think they were as strong as last season, but I still believe they will be in the mid-table region.

“Anyone that goes there and gets a victory will have done well to do so.”

There has been little change at Nursteed Road over the summer - Devizes lost only one player over the summer due to work and family commitments.

It means Perkins hopes to pick up from where Town left off at the end of last season and picking up points away from home is one target the assistant boss is keen to fulfil.

He said: “Any points away from home in our league are good.

“We know it will be tough, regardless if our opposition are at the top of the league or struggling at the bottom.

“Pre-season was a bit hit and miss, we had a couple of positive results and a few bad ones. On the player recruitment front, things have gone well. But regarding pre-season it has been poor.

“There’s a lot of expectation on us this year after finishing fifth last season. We want to try and push on towards the top of the league this year, so the pressure is on.”

Elsewhere in the Toolstation League, Calne Town failed to build on Saturday’s 1-0 home win against Bristol Telephones as they were downed 3-1 by Warminster at home on Tuesday night.

Chippenham Park experienced better fortunes against Warminster on Saturday when earning a 1-0 win.

The result ensured Joe Sharples’ men made the perfect start to their campaign with a trip to Bishops Lydeard scheduled this weekend.

Corsham Town also scooped three points after Dan King’s late strike against Welton Rovers secured at the weekend.
