JORDAN Smith claimed a second top-10 finish on the European Tour this season when he ended in a tie for eighth place at the Italian Open today.

Fellow Wiltshire golfer Laurie Canter finished in a tie for 36th place, having been the last man to secure qualification for the tournament at Brescia.

Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen claimed victory by a single stroke from home player Francesco Molinari, who was looking to make it back-to-back Tour wins after triumphing at the BMW PGA Championship last week.

Smith’s performance at Gardagolf Country Club follows his tied third-place finish at the China Open back in late April and saw him shoot four rounds in the 60s.

Starting the final day at 13-under, Bowood player Smith recorded an eagle, five birdies and four bogeys for a three-under 68 to finish on 16-under overall.

That was still six shots adrift of winner Olesen, whose seven-under final round of 64 took him to 22-under for the tournament.

Canter, who is based at Cumberwell Manor in Bradford on Avon, began the final day at seven-under and matched county colleague Smith’s closing 68 to finish on 10-under overall.
