IN-FORM Calne Town became the highest-placed Wiltshire side in the Toolstation League First Division after they bested hapless Bishop Sutton at the weekend.

The Lilywhites have won four of their last five outings and have only been beaten once – a 2-1 loss at Roman Glass St George – in their last seven, and on Saturday, they leapfrogged Corsham Town and moved into the top half of the table following a 2-0 triumph in Somerset.

Neurin Jones’ men flew out of the traps and were a goal to the good within the opening minute, with Mark Dolman giving the visitors the advantage against Sutton, who are yet to taste victory this season.

Calne continued to turn the screw in the opening stages but Steve Allison was forced into a save with 27 minutes on the clock before Harry Spanton crossed for Dolman to head over the bar.

Player-manager Jones intercepted the resultant goal kick and fed Dolman again but he couldn’t hit the target before Kris Beasley also shot off-target.

But a minute before the break, the visitors did manage to punish Sutton for a mistake, with Kris Beasley pouncing on a loose pass before crossing for Jake Jeffries to double Calne’s lead.

Early in the second period, the hosts’ Raphael Waugh came within inches of halving the deficit, striking the post after rounding Allison, whilst the Lilywhites keeper was also forced to tip a shot over the bar in the 68th minute.

With nine minutes to go, substitute Stuart Windsor latched on to a clearance from Spanton before crossing into the path of Rob Pocock but he was unable to get his name on the scoresheet as he shot straight into the home goalie’s arms.

Calne go looking to maintain their fine form when they host Radstock Town this weekend.
