MUCH-DEPLETED Pewsey, making eight changes from the previous week, fought hard, but were beaten on the wide outside as the clock ticked down.
Calne, receiving the kick, charged forward and caught a stationary Vale off balance to barrel over for a converted try with less than three minutes gone.
Pewsey responded immediately from the restart and surged down field, enjoying the majority of territorial advantage and by the end of the first quarter had forced two penalties, both converted by centre Gareth George.
But the last 15 minutes of the first half belonged to Calne; a penalty and two converted tries moving them 24-6 in front.
Pewsey rallied and, showing some of their first quarter resilience, scored from a driving maul from which hooker Nick Damper burrowed over for a try, converted by George.
Vale held on until the last 15 minutes as missed tackles and Calne’s pace out wide showed through.
The home side scored four tries, three of which were converted.
Pewsey battled on and, just before the final whistle, a back row move paid off and number eight Olly Spence was in for a try, converted by George.
