THE derelict Angel Inn pub on Wootton Bassett High Street is set to be transformed into a high class hotel.

The Grade II listed building, which forms a significant part of the High Street conservation area, has been empty for more than a year.

Now, a planning application has been submitted to North Wiltshire District Council for permission to change it into a hotel, bar and restaurant.

The proposals, which have been submitted by Carl Goodman, also include converting the outbuildings to a 17-bedroom annexe for guests.

Planning consultant Philip Moren gave an assurance that the main facade onto the High Street would not be altered.

The work would create an economically viable new use for the listed building, which dates back to the 18th century, and would fund the restoration of the building, he said.

The renovation would also provide tourist accommodation and improve the character and appearance of the frontage to Borough Fields.”

Coun Audrey Wannell fully supported the plans, saying the renovation would fill a gaping hole in the High Street.

She said: “I think it is absolutely wonderful.

“Wootton Bassett could do with a good quality hotel in the centre of the town and it would fill in the gap that is there at the moment.

“The old Tesco site is empty and so are the bookmakers next to the Angel. It has caused a huge hole.”

A decision will be made by May.
