A robbery at a petrol station in Royal Wootton Bassett last night has prompted police to appeal for witnesses.

The incident occurred at the Spar Esso garage on the High Street, at around 9:30pm.

A man walked into the garage in the High Street and demanded cash from a member of staff.

He left via the front door and fled the area on foot, towards the rear of the filling station.

The man is described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall, and he was wearing grey and black clothing. He had his face covered.

Sergeant Neil Duffin, from the Wiltshire North Community Policing Team, said: “This was clearly a very frightening incident for the member of staff involved but fortunately no-one was injured.

“Incidents of this type are very rare in our town, and while this will no doubt cause concern, we would like to reassure local residents that there is no ongoing risk to members of the public.”

Anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously in the area of the filling station or The Rosary around the time of the robbery is asked to contact Melksham CID on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
