Top Gear is set to return to the BBC after a four-year hiatus.
A new series is being developed after a four-year absence from British television following a horror crash involving former host Andrew Flintoff in 2022.
Ed Havard, the BBC's director of entertainment, confirmed the news at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
The impending return of Top Gear, however, comes with no confirmation regarding the show's host.
Who will host the new series of Top Gear?
While there have been rumours about comedian Jimmy Carr being considered for the role, Mr Havard declined to comment.
It was previously reported by The Sun that Carr had been in talks to take over as a presenter of the show.
A source told the publication, "Production has their sights set on Jimmy; he’s the ideal host to take the show into a new era and revive Top Gear.
"He’s keen to work on something mainstream after spending so many years fronting comedy panel shows.
"He’s a real car buff, too, so it would be a passion project.
"Casting directors are now working to find talent to join him in the new-look ensemble.
"Bosses are considering a woman and online celebrities to complement Jimmy."
Former rugby player Joe Marler, who gained television fame through The Celebrity Traitors, is also reportedly being considered.
However, no contracts have been finalised as yet.
How Top Gear has changed over the years
The motoring show gained global recognition with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, and producer Andy Wilman.
It later saw a successful run with Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Andrew Flintoff, after they took over from Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans.

The show was taken off air in 2022 following a serious crash involving Mr Flintoff at the Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey.
While driving a three-wheeled Morgan Super 3 car, it overturned, dragging Mr Flintoff face down for about 50 metres, resulting in facial disfigurement, rib injuries, and trauma.
