The picture postcard published on October 21 which showed a stand by A S Wordley of Lavington has brought back memories for several readers.

The company was founded in September 1949 by Arthur Wordley, Len Bull and Raymond Rudler, a farmer from Horton. Len Bull’s son, Richard, who himself joined A S Wordley in 1964, remembers the picture well.

It also brought back memories for Colin Slade, who worked for Wordleys from 1959 until its closure in 1986.

He says the picture was taken at Trowbridge and District Agricultural Show, probably on May 27 1954. It could not be 1950, as stated in the Gazette, because one of the tractors was not launched until later.

Three of the five men in the picture are indentified as Arthur Wordley, Ivan Bailey and Ken Abrahams.

Winston Coombes also got in touch to say that he remembers Arthur Wordley, his wife and children, Clive and Geraldine, when they lived in Coate. “My mother use to look after the garden for them and I used to till and plant their garden,” he writes.

Meanwhile Seend Parish Council received a request for information about the Stokes clothiers who contributed to the village church in the 15th and 16th centuries. A plaque to John Stokes is in the church.

Jim Minor, 86, who lives in the USA, e-mailed Seend Parish Council in a bid to find other members of his family. If you can help, e-mail him at stpat1122@aol.com.
