This picture of ambulance staff was taken in Chippenham and shows the smiling faces of both men and women staff.

It has no date but looks as though it might have been taken in the 1920s.

Some of the biggest advances in the use and development of ambulances came with warfare.

Emergency ambulances were first recorded in 1487, when the Spanish Army used them to pick up injured soldiers from the battlefield, once hostilities had stopped.

Nearly 300 years later, “flying ambulances” were developed to pick up wounded soldiers from the battlefield without bothering to wait until fighting had stopped.

In 1832, civilian ambulances were developed to treat and carry cholera patients to hospital.

The first motor ambulances were introduced around 1948, often hearses being used since they were designed to take patients lying down.
