Schoolboy boy Jared Jennings was dumbfounded when he noticed his village’s name was spelled wrongly on a major road sign.

Jared, ten, who lives in Chiseldon, was confused after noticing a sign on the A420 pointing to a place named Chisledon.

The little boy immediately informed his dad Paul who turned around and drove past again to double check on Tuesday.

The spelling error is on the A420 at the White Hart Roundabout in Stratton.

Jared said: “Whoever is in charge of spelling on road signs should phone up Chiseldon schoolchildren for a spelling test.

“They should put up a new sign or change it, as people may think there is another place called ‘Chisledon’.

“I live in Chiseldon – not Chis le don. It was the first time I spotted it. They should ask a 10-year-old how to spell it.”

Dad-of-two Paul said: “It made me laugh when I saw it and drove past again to make sure.

“Normally you would just presume a place name on a road sign is spelt correctly. Jared said we should phone the newspaper.”

The little boy also saw the humour in his discovery.

“I thought it was a bit funny and silly so I told my dad and sister,” he said.

But a Chiseldon parish councillor said the village name has been spelt both ways for years.

Councillor Keith Bates said: “This has been going on for 20 years. It has never been discussed since I was a councillor but it has been noted. People can take their choice – there is so much misspelling nowadays and with names, there is often no correct way to spell it.”

But the parish council has agreed with Jared on how to spell the village name and opts for Chiseldon with the “e” in front of the “l”. Mr Bates said it was the most common and accepted way to spell the village.

A spokesman for Swindon Council said:“It’s a fair cop – we’ve got the ‘l’ and the ‘e’ the wrong way round.

“The sign’s been there for a few years and, as far as we know, no one’s failed to find Chiseldon as a result but we will change it.”
