TALENTED pupils from Malmesbury School have earned their place in the final of Tomorrow's Engineers Robotics Competition.

The eight clever kids from year seven and eight competed against 12 other teams from across the region to qualify for the UK final of the LEGO robotics competition at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham later this month.

Year 11 academic leader, Gemma Down, said: “The students involved put in a huge amount of effort to get both robots working in time. They worked very well as a team and were a real credit to the school. It was a great opportunity for them to see how what they were learning in the classroom could be applied in the wider world.”

At the regional competition they won the overall competition, as well as an award for creating the best humanitarian relief robot using LEGO mindstorms. They also came second in the fastest robot competition by just 0.08 seconds.

As well as having to build two robots, they also had to research and present on a humanitarian relief technology, of which they chose 3D printing, complete a teamwork challenge involving building a free-standing tower, and give a presentation on their robots, explaining the engineering behind them.
