AFFORDABLE homes have been given the go ahead in Hungerford, as planning permission to build 100 new homes in the town has been granted.

The development will be built off Salisbury Road and within walking distance of the town centre. It will also include 40 affordable homes made up of 28 rented homes and 12 homes offered as shared ownership.

West Berkshire Council announced that the mix of one, two, three and four bedroom houses will be built with 4.8 acres of parkland and include spaces for children to play.

A spokesperson for CALA Homes and Wates Developments, which will be working together on the project, said: “The process to bring forward this much needed new housing provision for Hungerford, together will all the additional benefits, has been unnecessarily long.

"We have always maintained that we have a well-positioned and sustainable site on which to deliver a range of high-calibre new homes for the many people who want to live and be part of the thriving Hungerford and West Berkshire community."

“Going forward, we hope to work together with Hungerford Town Council, to make a real contribution to meeting the local need for new homes – particularly affordable homes – and give hard-working families a great place to live.”

As part of the Community Infrastructure Levy paid to West Berkshire council by developers, £175,000 will be earmarked for local causes.
