Three huge cheques are set to change football in Calne forever after years of hard work by staff at Beversbrook and the town council.

Plans to develop the town’s sports facility were given a huge boost last month thanks to a cash injection from recycling and composting company Virador, which has donated £50,000.

It is the latest company to help out, with the money added to funding from the Football Foundation worth £98,922, and £50,000 from Sport England, which was awarded in February and May last year.

It means that work can finally begin on creating four new grass football pitches, ten months after planning began.

Calne Town Council clerk Linda Roberts said she is delighted that the developments can begin.

“On behalf of the town council I would like to thank most sincerely the grant funding bodies who have made phase two of Beversbrook Sports Pitches, the dream, become a reality,” she said.

“It is fair to say that without exception all these organisations realise how important the facilities at Beversbrook are to the community of Calne and why further investment is necessary.”

The first two pitches will be used by senior players, the third will be used for junior players and the fourth will be a mini soccer pitch.

Forty-one football teams currently play at the venue, including FC Calne Youth, but it is estimated that there will be 61 teams based there in the next two or three seasons.

While the pitches will be constructed by September 28 this year, it will take until the following September before they can be used.

“It took 12 years to get Beversbrook phase one in the ground and it has grown from strength to strength, not least because of the dedicated team of staff who look after the facility,” said Mrs Roberts.

“I hope that the facilities at Beversbrook go on to serve the community for many years to come and maybe one day produce a home-grown Olympic star.”
