Three sporting legends are set to visit a Chippenham sports project on Sunday.

Icons Daley Thompson, Sharron Davies and Jonathan Edwards are visiting Ninja Tots at Abbeyfield School this weekend as part of a country-wide tour.

The stars are visiting as part of Join In Local Sport, an independent charity funded by government with the specific aim of getting as many people as possible to turn up, take part and join in at their local sports facilities this weekend.

The initiative is backed by Team GB medal winners, the Duke of Cambridge as well as the Prime Minister and London 2012 Chairman, Lord Sebastian Coe.

Thompson, Davies and Edwards will be joined by broadcaster John Inverdale on their tour in the Battle Bus, which will take in sports clubs around the country in a three-day tour.

They will visit Chippenham on the third and final day.

Ninja Tots, a mixed martial arts club for children aged from two to seven  aims to teach young children teamwork, ambition, confidence and dedication in a fun way.

Antonia Sarnago-Orchard, who runs the club, said she was overwhelmed to discover she would be meeting the sporting athletes who inspired her as a child.

“The club was started by my sister Victoria Foote,” she said.

“We did a spell at the Croydon Harriers when we were teenagers, and I will always remember Daley Thompson running past me on the track. To meet the people who inspired us so much is just going to be amazing. We are over the moon about it.”

The sisters have been telling their young children all about the Olympics.

“We’ve been avidly watching it,” said Mrs Sarnago-Orchard.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet four of our heroes. I still can’t believe it. When we found out, it was such a shock.

"The day is for children from the town to come and take part in a sport, and everyone is welcome.”

The ex-Olympians will be treated to a martial arts demonstration from current members, chat to parents about the benefits of getting involved with sport, and also have a go on the mats themselves.
