CORSHAM is in for a woolly big transformation when it takes part in the international Yarn Bomb-ing Day on June 9.

Yarn bombing is street art which involves colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn over everyday objects such as lampposts, benches and trees.

Residents and local knitting groups have been meeting regularly to make pieces for the project, and the big stitch up by Knit Corsham will take place in the town on the evening of June 8, with residents faced with a brand new Corsham on Saturday morning.

Knit and Natter workshops have taken place at The Pound, in Pound Pill, over the last month with creations contributing towards the project.

Diana Hatton, visual arts co-ordinator at Pound Arts, said: “With 2012 being such a special year for the United Kingdom with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics this summer, we wanted to do something fun that involved the whole community.

“It has been wonderful that we have had people from as far away as Australia sending their creations over to be part of Knit Corsham.

“The threads of creativity and goodwill are truly stretching around the world.

“Thanks to a strong Facebook campaign and a growing international network, Corsham suddenly seems the centre of the world.”

Groups and individuals from Canada, Italy, Ken-tucky and Washington DC as well as Lincolnshire, Corn-wall and Bristol have donated to Corsham’s Yarn Bombing creations.

The Knit Corsham street art celebrating International Yarn Bombing Day will be in the town until June 17.

The next meeting of the Knit and Natter workshop at the Pound will be on from 10am-12pm on Wednesday.
