Frogwell School is out of special measures just a year after an Ofsted report judged it ‘inadequate’.

The Chippenham primary school, which has always been backed by supportive parents, received a rating of satisfactory in its third monitoring visit since March last year, and headteacher Avis Ball said she is delighted.

“We are very pleased indeed but we don’t see this as being the end of our journey,” she said.

“It’s a case of ‘onwards and upwards’. We are delighted but will continue to get better and better.”

Mrs Ball said changes to the Ofsted system earlier this year mean it is even more difficult to do well in the inspections, making their recovery even sweeter.

New Ofsted chief inspector Michael Wilshaw announced in February that a number of changes to the inspections would be carried out, including unannounced inspections for all schools.

In the report, compiled by inspectors Chris Nye and Lesley Voaden, Frogwell is praised for having “tackled the weaknesses identified in the previous inspection effectively”.

The report also reads: “The headteacher and senior leadership of the school have united staff in driving such improvement and this is having a significant impact on raising standards of pupils’ achievement.

“Subject leaders are using assessment data very well to monitor progress in their subjects, but are aware that they need to develop their skills further in monitoring subject teaching. The governing body is well-informed and provides a suitable balance of challenge and support which is further helping the school in its drive to improve. Although improvements are still comparatively recent, inspection evidence suggests that these are secure and that the school has the capacity to build upon these effectively.”

Mrs Ball said the support of parents and teaching staff had been essential in getting the school out of special measures.

“From the staff’s point of view, it was the commitment and support of the governors and the majority of parents and carers that gave us the determination to carry on,” she said.
