Each month customers at Waitrose decide which local charities and organisations should benefit from the store’s Comm-unity Matters scheme.

For the past four years Waitrose in Marlborough – and each of the other 270 stores across the country – gives £1,000 to the local community.

Marlborough store community matters organiser Janice Kingstone said that charities and organisations are invited to apply to the scheme.

Each month three are chosen and customers vote using green tokens given out with every purchase; the money being split accordingly.

Mrs Kingstone said: “It’s a key part of the scheme that customers have a say.”

Acting branch manager Richard Clare presented cheques to Swindon Women’s Refuge (£476) and Kennet Furniture Project (£222). The third charity in February was Greyhound Rescue West of England, which got £302.

The charities for May are Pewsey Primary School, 1st Ramsbury Scouts and Great Bedwyn Playgroup. Organisations or charities which would like to take part can call Mrs Kingstone on (01672) 513337.
