ROCK legends Brian May and Mike Rutherford are the latest musicians to be confirmed for a charity concert in All Cannings.

Queen founding member Mr May, and Genesis founding member Mr Rutherford – who is now with Mike & The Mechanics – have joined a star-studded line up for the concert on May 26.

Co-organiser of the concert John ‘Grubby’ Callis, a sound engineer of Beeching-stoke, has worked with Mr May and Mr Rutherford.

Mr Callis and Andy Scott, guitarist with The Sweet who lives in All Cannings, have both been treated for prostate cancer at hospitals in Bristol and the concert aims to raise £50,000 for Cancer Research UK as well as make a substantial donation to Above & Beyond, the charity that raises funds for Bristol’s nine central hospitals.

Mr May said: “I was devastated to hear the news that my good friend and esteemed monitor engineer John ‘Grubby’ Callis had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but relieved that it was discovered relatively early and that he had received fantastic treatment.

“I immediately agreed to perform at Concert at the Kings on May 26 which Grubby has organised with a little help from his friends. He has pulled out all the stops for what I know will be a fantastic show. After about 30 years in the music business he certainly knows what that demands and has the expertise to put it together.”

Mr May will perform with Kerry Ellis as part of the line up for The SAS Band. Ms Ellis has starred in musicals in London and on Broadway and has collaborated with Mr May on projects.

Mr Rutherford said: “I have played concerts all over the world in Genesis and Mike & The Mechanics and Grubby was always at the side of the stage – in charge of the monitors – in fact one of the hardest jobs on a tour.

“So I am only too pleased to be part of what will be a fantastic musical evening.”

Mr Callis, 52, said: “I didn’t envisage having so much support from my good friends. It’s going to be a great night. The response has been fantastic.”

The concert is being held in a field at the back of the Kings Arms pub in All Cannings. Other acts performing are The Dave Kelly Blues Band, The Wurzels, The Strawbs, The Sweet, Madeline Bell, Midge Ure, Tom Robinson, Chris Thompson, Patti Russo and The Fabbagirls.

There are 4,999 tickets on sale at the Kings Arms pub, Wadworth Brewery visitor centre in Devizes, and Sound Knowledge and The Food Gallery in Marlborough. See www.concertatthekings.co.uk
