The inaugural Persimmon Homes Malmesbury Half Marathon was officially launched today (Friday) to mark a new sporting milestone for the region.

The 13.1 mile race will take place on Sunday, September 23 with runners starting in Malmesbury High Street at 11am.

Limited to 500 places, the route will take place around the historic town with Prospect Hospice and Hope for Tomorrow announced as the nominated charities.

Organiser James Higgs from DB Max Events, said: "We came up with the idea of the half marathon when the council approached us to see if we had any ideas on how we could support the Olympics.

"The Malmesbury Half Marathon wouldn’t be happening if we didn’t have the support from Persimmon Homes Wessex and our other sponsors. "This is just the start of a partnership that will strengthen as the marathon takes shape and grows in popularity for many years to come."

Steve Roche, Persimmon Homes Wessex MD, said: "We are delighted to be giving something back to the local community by becoming the title sponsor of the Malmesbury Half Marathon.

"As a significant employer in the region, we are only too pleased to be bringing everyone together to raise much needed funds for two very worthwhile charities."
