Calne volunteer Sally Green said she can’t quite believe she has been invited to the Queen’s garden party.

Mrs Green, 57, was nominated to go to one of this year’s garden parties by Calne Police, as recognition for her hard work in helping run the Bluez ‘n’ Zuz discos in the town.

Mrs Green has been involved with the discos, which take place every month, usually at John Bentley School, since they started.

The mum-of-four, who works as a teaching assistant at the school, said: “A few years ago the school asked if anyone would be willing to volunteer to help out at the Bluez ‘n’ Zuz. I said I would and I have been helping out every month since.”

Mrs Green will be one of around 30,000 people to attend the garden parties at Buckingham Palace in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. The parties have been held at the palace every year since the 1860s and are a way of rewarding those who have given a great deal to their local communities.

Mrs Green said: “I don’t know much about the party to be honest. When I was told I was going to be recognised in some way I assumed it was going to be a “thank you” of some kind from the police.

“I never expected this would happen. They rang and said I was going to the garden party – I couldn’t believe it.

“I am really looking forward to it and I feel quite honoured to be a part of it. It is not the kind of thing everyone gets to do.

“I have been helping out at Bluez ‘n’ Zuz for a long time but just having people say ‘thank you’ is enough for me.

“The discos are a lot of hard work but it is a team effort. The police do so much running around, especially PCSO Nicole Yates, to put the discos on.”

PCSO Nicole Yates, who nominated Mrs Green, said: “She has been to every disco for the past two years. She has always helped us out and is a great contact between the Bluez ‘n’ Zuz and the school.

“She is so reliable and helpful and gets on with the kids really well. I think it is wonderful that she helps out on Friday nights in her own time.

“She really deserves the recognition and that is why we nominated her.”

The Bluez ‘n’ Zuz discos are run by neighbourhood policing teams across the county and, with more than 100 children at every event, Calne’s is one of the most successful.
