Radio producer Mark Jones, who lives in Swindon but was brought up in Marlborough, ran his first London Marathon on Sunday.
He crossed the finish line in four hours and 28 minutes, which was two minutes better than he had predicted.
Mr Jones, 46, hopes his run will have raised about £1,500 towards the work of the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).
He chose to support the charity because his lifelong friend Nick Penny, 43, who also grew up in Marlborough, has sight problems and has used the services of the RNIB.
Mr Jones, who recently took up running again after a break, and Mr Penny, who now lives in Wroughton and was also in Sunday’s race, started running together during their childhood in Marlborough.
It was also Mr Penny’s first London Marathon.
Before the race, Mr Jones, whose parents live in Pipers Piece, said: “I would like to finish in about four and a half hours.”
