The younger generation of Devizes running group, Hickey’s Harriers, set up by former head teacher Barry Hickey in the 1990s, did well in Sunday’s race.

Roy Perrett, a veteran of several London Marathons, said: “Our young harriers did us proud, especially as all three suffered illness or injury in the run-up to, and on the day of, the marathon, so a really fantastic effort by all.”

Mr Perrett’s son Tom, who was raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, finished in four hours and 14 minutes, while Joe Bowerbank, son of Pete Bowerbank, organiser of the Kennet Kanter, clocked three hours and 39 minutes.

Barry Hickey’s son Joe, who was also raising money for Macmillan, was disappointed with his time. He said: “The marathon was great, if also very tough. I dragged myself round in 5.07.47 in the end and was just glad to finish.”

Joe’s friend and former schoolmate Gareth Simmons, who grew up in Seend and whose parents live in Bromham, completed the course in three and a half hours
