Organisers of the Devizes marquee at next week’s Diamond Jubilee event in Salisbury were delighted to hear that the Queen will be visiting their exhibit.

Her Majesty will only be visiting a handful of the tents, part of a medieval fair set up in Salisbury Cathedral Close as a showcase for Wiltshire towns next Tuesday.

The Devizes tent has been selected because of the quality of its exhibit.

Coun Laura Mayes, chairman of Devizes Area Board, who has been instrumental in the organisation of the exhibit, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Queen will be coming to our tent.

“She will be able to see the quality of what we have to offer in the town and some of our history, which goes back to the Norman Conquest.

“Everyone involved in this project has worked so hard and the Queen’s visit makes it all worthwhile.”

The display will feature the heritage and culture of the area, including the chance to meet Wadworth Brewery’s master cooper, Alastair Simms, see a display by the Devizes Regency Dancers and a performance by the Potterne Mummers.

The Devizes area will be featured in a video, produced by local film maker James Harrison, while Devizes Carnival and International Street Festival, the Battle of Roundway, Devizes Millennium White Horse, the Kennet and Avon Canal and Wiltshire Heritage Museum will all have their place in the marquee.

Her Majesty is to be presented with a hamper of county produce, including goodies from the Devizes area.

Among these are prime Devon Red beef from the Daws’ farm at All Cannings, fresh Bromham vegetables, courtesy of Village Veg, and wine and apple juice from A Beckett’s vineyard, in Littleton Panell, care of Plank’s Farm Shop at Lydeway.

Devizes brewer Wadworth has entered into the spirit of the jubilee by producing a special ale in a limited edition of only 1,200 bottles.

Charles Bartholomew, chairman of Wadworth, said: “Wadworth has produced a beer for the Queen’s coronation and previous jubilees, so it is only right that we produce something unique, yet traditional, much like Her Majesty, to toast this wonderful event.”
