FAMILIES in Upavon will use their £100 grant to flag up social events in their village, not just for this year’s royal anniversary, but for the future as well.

The Upavon Bunting Group plans to decorate the village with mini flags this June and during royal events in years to come.

Behind the idea is Lorraine Lamb, from Chapel Lane, who has persuaded other mothers in the village to help her make the red, white and blue bunting.

Her four-year-old twins, Mattie and Skye, love the idea, she said, and can’t wait for the fabric and tapes to arrive so they can help make the bunting.

Mrs Lamb said the big problem was how to pay for the material and all the other bits and pieces needed to make large quantities of bunting.

“There are various events going on around the village and we will be having a street party for Chapel Lane and Jarvis Street in the garden of one of the big houses for which we wanted some really nice bunting,” Mrs Lamb said.

“So we have decided to make it ourselves.”

Mrs Lamb said the £100 from the Gazette community fund would help cover the cost of the materials they need so a start can be made on making the strings of flags.

“We are still at the planning stage, but now we know we will be getting this money we can go out and buy the fabric, threads and the tapes that will be needed.

“We are going to start by making some patterns and then we plan to get people to come to sewing parties, to do the cutting, sewing and putting together the strings of bunting.”

Mrs Lamb said it would bring the community closer to work together and have a good time.
