Chippenham MP Duncan Hames has supported the launch of a new handbook to help people suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease.

The Advanced Parkinson’s Pathfinders Handbook was developed by the European Parkinson’s Disease Association and pharmaceuticals company Abbott to help people know what they should expect as their disease progresses.

It also provides information and support on how to get the most out of life with Parkinson’s disease.

Although there is no cure for the disease, early identification of the symptoms and support from a movement disorder specialist helps patients receive the best treatment as the condition progresses.

Mr Hames told the Commons he was delighted to be helping to raise awareness of the condition.

“Each UK member of Parliament represents, on average, nearly 200 people living with Parkinson’s disease,” he said.

“Practical guides provide a valuable information source so people know what to expect and how to ask for help as their needs change. People with Parkinson’s disease deserve support every step of the way.”

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that affects 120,000 people in the UK, with a further 10,000 people diagnosed with the disease each year.

Dr Mary Baker MBE, patron of European Parkinson’s Disease Association and editor of the handbook, said: “We welcome the support of Duncan Hames. “It is crucial that patients are involved in decisions about their care and can make informed choices about their treatment.”
