A DEVIZES man who died on Friday night after his body was found in the Kennet and Avon Canal has been named by police.

Gary Smith, 45, died at 10.10pm after a call to emergency services was made at 8pm.

A 47-year-old woman, who was at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and taken to Melksham Police Station.

She has since been bailed to return on a date in early May.

Mr Smith’s next of kin have been informed.

The post mortem examination gave the cause of death as drowning.

Detectives are still appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident and may have seen what happened to step forward.

It is believed Mr Smith and the woman had been drinking in and around Devizes from 2pm onwards, and during the late afternoon they were seen sat alongside the canal at Caen Hill.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Saunders said: “We have had a good response from the public so far but we continue to appeal to anyone – dog walkers, runners, cyclists or local residents who may have seen something between the hours of 7pm and 8pm.

“We would still like to hear from a man who was seen walking along the towpath between 7.30pm and 8pm and who was seen waving at another man on a quad bike.

“If you saw the man and the woman by the canal, witnessed the incident, or have any information that you think would assist police, please get in touch.”
