A man who died after he was found in the canal at Devizes on Friday night has been named as Gary Smith, 45, from the town.

A 47-year-old woman was arrested on the night on suspicion of manslaughter, but detectives continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident.

Police were called at 8pm to reports of a 45-year-old man in the water near Lock 40 on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Paramedics treated the man after he was pulled out and he was taken to Swindon's Great Western Hospital by air ambulance, but died in the hospital at 10.10pm.

The woman, who was at the scene, was taken to Melksham police station and has since been bailed to return on a date in early May.

Gary Smith’s next of kin have been informed. The post mortem examination gave the cause of death as drowning.

Detectives continue to appeal for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident and may have seen what happened. It is believed that the man and woman had been drinking in and around Devizes from about 2pm. During the late afternoon they were seen sat alongside the canal at Caen Hill.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Saunders said: “We have had a good response from the public so far but we continue to appeal to anyone - dog walkers, runners, cyclists or local residents who may have seen something between 7pm and 8pm.

"We would still like to hear from a man who was seen walking along the tow path between 7.30pm and 8pm and who was seen waving at another man on a quad bike.

"If you saw the man and woman by the canal, witnessed the incident, or have any information that you think would assist police, please get in touch. ”

If anyone has information they are asked to call Wiltshire police on 101 or alternatively if you would like to remain anonymous please call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
