Following the addition of 37p to a packet of cigarettes in last week’s Budget, health advisors in Wiltshire are encouraging smokers to quit the habit.
NHS Wiltshire’s stop smoking service helped 2,800 people last year to give up.
Based on a 20-a-day cigarette habit, quitting could save about £45.50 a week – £182 a month.
Julie and Stephen Farrell, of Melksham, both stopped smoking through the service and now have at least £100 per month more in their pockets as a result. Mrs Farrell described her stopping smoking as a “miracle”.
She said: “I couldn’t have done it without the support from the advisor, the other smokers at the clinic and the medication.”
The stop smoking service offers free support and advice in GP surgeries and pharmacies. There are also walk-in clinics at Chippenham, Devizes, Melksham, Trowbridge and Westbury. For further details, call (01380) 733891.
