DEVIZES town councillors have had a disappointing reply from Wiltshire Council as they try to organise a bus link between the new marina at the foot of Caen Hill and the town centre.

Councillors are keen that boaters who moor at Caen Hill Marina can easily get to shops in the town centre but their efforts are encountering difficulties.

They wrote to Wiltshire Council asking for a bus stop to be installed at the entrance to the marina but a reply from Parvis Khansari, the service director for highways and transport, was less than encouraging.

He wrote: “Unfortunately, there are no pedestrian facilities whatsoever at that point and, with the nature and speed of the road, it would be essential for a certain amount of infrastructure to be provided so that passengers can wait safely.”

There is currently no money in the highways budget for this work so councillors are now turning their thoughts to setting up a minibus link to the marina.

Coun Ted East told Tuesday’s council meeting: “At a recent meeting at the marina there was great interest in a minibus service. We must now write to Wiltshire Council to see if they wish to facilitate this service.”

The town council will also write to bus companies to gauge their interest in operating the service.
