An old railway tunnel has become quite an attraction for walkers in Malmesbury.

The tunnel is in the grounds of a house currently on the market and has been restored and lit by the current owners Gavin and Elizabeth Cook who are selling the property via Malmesbury estate agents, Bridges Lockstone.

It can be seen by walkers going through the town's Conygre Meade, a wooded area at the base of the famous Malmesbury Abbey and river.

The tunnel goes underneath the Cook's property and through the garden and was built by one of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s engineers.

The couple have also recently paid for an information board to be put up on the other side of the river telling the story of the tunnel, in association with the Malmesbury River Valleys Trust.

David Rogers of Bridges Lockstone says that the tunnel is something to be appreciated.

"Every house tells a story but this is one of real local significance.

"It looks great from the footpath through Conygre Mead and even better close up.

"The current owners have used it for parties and it has also been used by the local film society."
