Double platinum album holder Newton Faulkner performed an intimate set for students at Chippen-ham’s Hardenhuish School this weekend as the last of his pop-up gigs.

The 27-year-old singer songwriter, who originates from Surrey, is known for his guitar playing which involves rhythmically tapping and hitting the guitar’s body. Earlier this year, via his website, he asked fans to suggest local venues where he could play new material and Harden-huish was suggested to him by a number of pupils. On Saturday afternoon he hosted a workshop with 30 of the school’s music pupils, talking to them about his influences, how he writes his songs and how he creates his unique style of percussive guitar playing.

A performance to an audience of about 120 people took place in the evening in the school’s Peter Thompson Hall, where he played new material and old favourites.

Head of music Debbie Workman said: “He is a fantastic, talented musician and a lovely down-to-earth person. After the gig he signed autographs and posed for pictures with the pupils – nothing was too much trouble. We feel privileged that he came and it is an experience that I am sure the students will not forget.”

The day after the event the following was added to his Facebook page: “Thank you so much to everyone that came out last night to Hardenhuish, it was a fitting end to a ridiculous set of gigs. So that was the last one... not going to lie, little bit sad... I’ll definitely be doing another one of these kind of things at some point though, far too fun not to :-) A huge thank you to all the people that helped organise it and you guys for all your suggestions, couldn’t have done it without you. Hugs, Newton x.”

The performance comes just weeks away from release of his new EP ‘Sketches’ on April 17. He is writing and recording his third studio album at his home studio.
