A MUSICAL tribute to Tony Goldsmith, the former BT executive who dedicated his retirement to making music, has raised £600 for Cancer Research UK.

The Bear Hotel was the venue for the tribute concert featuring many of Mr Goldsmith’s musical colleagues, including Steve Baron, Dave Illingworth, Paul Hartshorn, Ray Colomb, Steve Loudoun, Barry Dean, Pete Lamb, Derek Head and Griff Daniels, which ran for six hours on Sunday.

The concert was free but donations were requested in aid of Cancer Research UK. A total of £600 was raised in Mr Goldsmith’s memory.

Mr Goldsmith died in January at the age of 65, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer only a few months previously. St John’s Church was full for a service in celebration of his life at which a number of his musician friends performed.

Mr Goldsmith was for many years the committee member of Devizes Festival responsible for the booking of rock, jazz and folk music events, and he established the regular Friday evening blues nights in the Cellar Bar at the Bear Hotel.

In his memory a framed photograph of him and one of his trademark caps will be hung in the Cellar Bar in what will now be called The Goldsmith Corner.

Contributions in his name can still be made to Cancer Research UK through Clive Sherman at the Bear Hotel on (01380) 722444.
