A 16-year-old girl was taken to hospital this morning after being struck by a vehicle on her way to college.

The Wiltshire College student, who is believed to be from the Harrier Close area, collided with a grey Renault Megane at the junction of North Way and North End at about 8am.

The collision was forceful enough for her to smash the car's windscreen.

She was taken to Great Western Hospital by an ambulance but her injuries were not thought to be serious.

Sergeant Phil Connor, of Calne Police, said: "It was a large impact, she went on to the bonnet and smashed the windscreen.

"There was some considerable damage to the vehicle. The girl suffered cuts and tissue damage to her back but we do not believe she suffered any head injuries or any life-changing injuries.

"Her parents were at the scene and, although distressed, she was able to communicate with them and with officers.

"It is important to say that there is no suggestion of the vehicle driving at any excess speed.

"It is believed the girl stepped out from between two parked cars.

"Obviously it was a foggy morning and we would say to young people that they need to be aware that nothing has changed from the green cross code.

"Do not cross between two vehicles - wait for a long, clear gap and make sure you can see properly in both directions, especially in these conditions and at busy times of the day."
