Despite all the negative publicity about work experience – or Workfare as it is otherwise called – Josh Swiffen says it has saved his life.

Mr Swiffen, 20, from Market Lavington, spent three years in college studying for an IT diploma after leaving Lavington School. He then worked in distribution at Hayden’s Bakery, rising to the position of supervisor before being made redundant before Christmas.

He said: “I found it difficult to get back into a routine. While I was working, my life was ordered. But when I was out of work I got very down.”

Then Mr Swiffen was offered a five-week placement with Healthy Life Company in Little Brittox, Devizes.

He said: “Suddenly, I had something to get out of bed for and it has been great.

“Some of my friends told me it was a bad idea, but it has worked out great for me.”

Justina Pettifer, owner of the company, said: “Josh has been a joy. He has established a website for us, marketing Water Bobbles, which are filter bottles we are selling. We donating 25p to Water Aid or to a local school for every bottle sold.”

The website can be found at www.waterbobbles.co.uk Mr Swiffen is hoping to launch a business designing websites. He said: “I have ordered business cards so I can get freelance work. But I shall still be looking for part-time work.”
