Police searching for missing Chippenham man Rick Maher have found a body in the River Avon in Monkton Park.

Mr Maher, 44, had not been seen since he left The Brunel pub on Wednesday night after an evening out with friends. He was seen on CCTV walking down towards town and then into the park towards his home, in Wentworth Close.

Teams of police, helped by Mr Maher's family and friends, spent yesterday searching along the river as well as carrying out foot patrols in Monkton Park. The police helicopter had also been carrying out searches.

A body was discovered in the river behind the Olympiad Leisure Centre at about 12.15pm today.

Family have been informed and, although a formal identification has yet to take place, police believe it is the body of Mr Maher.

A police spokesperson said: "At around 12.15pm today, Saturday, November 5, officers discovered the body of a man in the river in Chippenham.

"The body was discovered in a stretch of the river behind the Olympiad Leisure Centre.

"At this stage the death is not believed to be suspicous but inquiries are on-going and a post mortem examination will take place in the coming days."
