THE new superloo promised for George Lane car park in Marlborough is unlikely to be built until the planned theatre/cinema complex is under way.

While work on a new attended public convenience in Devizes is likely to start within months, there is not enough money to consider building the new one in Marlborough before the next financial year in April.

But there were further shocks for Marlborough councillors at Tuesday's meeting of Kennet District Council's community development executive committee.

Chairman Coun Chris Humphries said that, because the new £5.75 million Riverbank theatre complex proposed by Kennet Valley Arts Trust is to be built on the footprint of the existing conveniences, the new ones cannot be put up unless they are part of the new complex.

No date has been set for completion of the arts project but it is thought that it is several years in the future.

Coun Nick Fogg was told that the present toilets would not close until the new ones were in place.

Councillors agreed to provide an extra £7,989 towards the Devizes superloo, in the West Central car park, to make up the £498,708 estimated for the project.

Some £490,719 had been set aside for the project, including £150,000 originally earmarked for the Marlborough superloo.
