CUSTOMERS enjoying a drink in a Chippenham pub on Friday night had a nasty shock when a car ploughed through a fence and onto the pavement, coming to rest inches from the pub window.
The accident happened at around 11.10pm near The Pheasant pub on the corner of Hungerdown Lane.
The driver was heading from the Bath direction towards The Pheasant roundabout when he lost control of the Rover and veered across the road and towards the pub.
Assistant manager Matthew Parsons said: "I was behind the bar in the next room when it happened, but we heard it from there.
"Some of the people in the nearer room panicked - a table went over with lots of drinks on it.
"Then people ran out to see if the driver was okay."
The driver was cut free from the car by Chippenham firefighters and taken to hospital in an ambulance.
A police spokesman said he suffered a slight head injury.
The road was closed until 1.15am to allow the accident to be cleared.
